MIG/MAG Welder

You spend most of the day on MIG/MAG (135/136) running steel and structural sections, mainly 3 to 10 mm plate for frames, brackets and bespoke assemblies. Work comes off drawings, so you read the print, tack up, check square, then lay the runs. Days are 7am to 4pm on a single shift Monday to Friday, with the odd Saturday morning when an order is tight. You handle your own grinding, prep and tack work before welding, and you keep your bay clean. The shop does both repeat batch parts and one-off jobs, so no two weeks look quite the same.

You start at 2010 net a month and move toward 2310 net once you prove your welds hold up under inspection and you can run jobs with less supervision. The usual path is welder to lead welder, and from there a few people have stepped into shop coordination. Progression is tied to quality and reliability, not time served.

The site is a mid-sized fabrication hall with extraction at the welding bays and proper PPE provided. It gets warm in summer and the floor can be loud when the grinders are going, but the bays are well lit and the gear is kept in good order. Most of the crew has been there a while, so a new welder gets shown the ropes rather than left to guess.
