Bricklayer (Construction Labourer)

You will build load-bearing and partition walls in brick and concrete block, working off the architect's drawings and the foreman's marks. Most days start at 7am to beat the afternoon heat, with a break around 9 and lunch at noon. You mix mortar, set up and move your own scaffolding boards, run string lines, check plumb and level, and point the joints before the mortar sets. Expect to handle blocks by hand, feed a cement mixer, and cut brick with an angle grinder or bolster. The current job is a block of low-rise flats on the outskirts, so you will move between floors as the slabs go up. Clean-up and tidying the bay is part of the day, every day.

Two years or more laying brick and block on real sites

Can read basic plans and set out a wall from marks

You start at 1500 euros net a month. Once you show you can run a section on your own and hold the quality, pay moves up to 1730 euros net. From there the natural next step is leading a small crew or moving onto finer finish work.

It is an outdoor site, so you work in the sun and the dust through the Valencia summer and the wetter winter months. The crew is small and Spanish-speaking, and the foreman runs a tidy, safety-first job with daily toolbox talks. Hard physical days, but the pace is steady rather than frantic.
