Building Painter

You prepare the surface first: you brush off loose material, repair cracks with mortar, sand the patch and apply the fixing primer. Then you apply two coats of elastomeric or siloxane paint by roller and brush, cutting in at the edges of balconies and window reveals. Colour and coverage are checked against the sample panel agreed with the community. Interior work covers filling, sanding and two coats of plastic paint. Hours are 08:00-17:00, with an earlier finish in July and August.

At least three years painting facades or building interiors

Painters who take on the colour setting out and the sample panel become team leaders on a building, which is a graded post and carries the firm's own quality bonus.

Work from a suspended platform on facades of up to eight storeys, with a harness clipped to an independent line. Paints are water based on most jobs, and a mask is required whenever the airless gun is used.
