A main contractor building apartment blocks in the Haabersti district of Tallinn is taking on bricklayers for internal and external walls. The material is aerated concrete block and facing brick, and the contract runs on after the current building is finished.
About role
You set out the first course from the marks left by the surveyor, lay block and brick to the line, keep the joint thickness even and check level and plumb on every course. You mix or take delivery of the mortar, build the openings with the lintels shown on the drawing, leave the chases the electrician needs and clean the face as you go. The crew works in pairs with one labourer feeding material by hoist. The day is 08:00 to 16:30 with a half hour break, and you report to the foreman.
Who's a fit?
Vocational training as a bricklayer or at least three years on site
Laying aerated concrete block and facing brick to a line
Reading a wall drawing and finding the opening dimensions on it
Use of a level, a plumb line and a laser level
Working from a scaffold and following the scaffold rules
Willingness to work outdoors through the Estonian autumn
Basic English for material labels and safety signs

Promotion terms
A bricklayer who keeps the line and the paperwork clean takes charge of a pair and then of a whole facade, which carries a higher rate. The contractor pays for the national qualification examination.
Work environment
Open site work on scaffolds, in the wind and the rain from spring to late autumn, with mortar dust around the mixer. A helmet, gloves, safety shoes, glasses and a high visibility jacket are mandatory on every floor.
