Fruit and Vegetable Packer

You take the crates off the delivery, tip them onto the grading table and sort the fruit by size and colour, putting aside anything soft or marked. Good fruit goes into boxes to a set weight on the scale, and the box is labelled with the date and the grower code and stacked on the pallet. You keep the table and the crates washed down through the shift and help load the cold room at the end. Work runs 07:00-15:00, six days a week in the busy weeks.

No school certificate required, training is given on site

Packers who learn the grades and the label system take the scale and the quality check in the next season, which is the first step to line supervisor.

A covered packing hall open at the loading end, so it follows the outside temperature, with a cold room next to it. Aprons, gloves and rubber boots are provided, and the floor is washed down twice a day.
