Furniture Carpenter

You read the cutting list, run the panel saw and the edge bander, then drill the holes for the hinges and the shelf pins on the boring machine. Units are assembled on the bench, checked for square with a tape across the diagonals and packed with the fittings in a numbered box. Two days a week you go out with the fitting van to hang doors and adjust drawers in the customer home. Work runs 08:00-16:30 with a half hour break, and Saturday until 13:00 when a delivery is due.

Trade school in woodwork or equal practice in a workshop

At least two years on panel saw, edge bander and boring machine

Reading a cutting list and a simple furniture drawing

Measuring with a tape and a square to the millimetre

Driving licence B is useful for the fitting days

Basic English for machine menus and fitting instructions

Carpenters who cut and set out their own kitchens take the measuring visits at the customer home within two years, which is the step to workshop foreman.

A dry workshop with extraction on the saw and the bander, so the dust stays low, and a separate room for spraying. Ear protection, gloves and safety shoes are provided and replaced when worn.
