You set out the wall from the drawing, mark the openings, lay the first course level and build up to the ceiling, keeping the line and the plumb. Lintels, ties and the insulation layer go in as the wall rises. On rendering days you set the beads, throw and rule the coat, and float the surface when it takes up. You check your own work with a two metre straight edge before the foreman does. The day runs 07:00-15:00, Monday to Friday.

A bricklayer who can set out a whole floor and order his own materials becomes a crew leader within two seasons, with a fixed allowance on top of the rate. The firm keeps its crew leaders on through the winter.

Open sites with a fixed scaffold, mortar delivered by silo mixer and a hoist for material above the first floor. Helmet, gloves, boots and a harness on the edge are mandatory, and the firm supplies knee pads and wet weather clothing.
