You set the wall out from the foreman's marks, lay the first course to the line and the level, then build in block or brick with mortar mixed on the floor. You leave the openings the drawing shows, build in lintels and wall ties, and keep the wall plumb with a level and a plumb line at every course. At the end of the day you clean the tools, cover fresh work against rain and stack the next day's blocks near the wall. Work runs 07:00-15:30 Monday to Friday, and Saturday morning is worked in the dry months and paid separately.

Trade school in construction, or five years of practice on site

Setting a wall out from marks and keeping it plumb and level

Bricklayers who take on the setting out and the quantity take off move to crew leader within two years, and the firm pays for the site safety coordinator course.

An open site with scaffolding, edge protection and a covered mixing area, plus a heated site cabin with lockers and a drying room. A helmet, a harness where needed, gloves and safety shoes are mandatory and supplied.
