CNC Lathe Operator

You load the bar or the blank, call up the programme for the order, set the tool offsets and run the first piece. That piece is measured with a caliper, a micrometer and a bore gauge against the drawing before the batch is released. During the run you check every tenth part, correct the offsets for tool wear, change inserts when the finish drops and keep the swarf and the coolant under control. Finished parts are deburred, counted and put in the box with the route card. The shift is 08:00-17:00.

Trade school in machining or at least two years on a CNC lathe

Reads a technical drawing with tolerances and surface finish

Careful with setup, since the first piece releases the batch

Basic English for control menus and tool catalogues

An operator who sets the machine alone and holds tolerance moves to first class operator, and from there to programming at the control. The shop pays for a measurement course and for the programming module.

A clean machining hall with enclosed lathes, chip conveyors and a separate measuring room kept at a steady temperature. Glasses, gloves and safety boots are mandatory and are supplied by the employer, and ear protection is available at the saw.
