Greenhouse Worker

You plant, tie and prune the crop, remove side shoots, lower the strings as the plants grow, and pick into crates by size and colour class. Picking is done in the cool part of the day, and the crates go to the sorting shed where you weigh and label them. You also help with drip lines, with changing the bumblebee hives and with the yellow sticky traps that the agronomist checks. Chemical treatments are done by a licensed sprayer, never by the pickers. The day runs 06:00-14:00 in summer and 08:00-16:00 in the colder months.

No formal schooling required, the grower trains on the crop

Pickers who learn pruning and tying become row leaders in the second season, and the grower pays the licence course for plant protection, which is the best paid job on the holding.

Glass and plastic houses with drip irrigation, shading in July and August, drinking water at the end of every row and a shaded room for breaks. Gloves, a sun hat and rubber boots are supplied by the grower.
