Production Operator

You stand at a packing line, feed film and cartons, watch the filling weight and take a sample off the line every hour for the scale. You clear a jam yourself when the belt stops, call maintenance when the fault is in the machine, and write both on the shift sheet. At the end of the run you strip the line, wash the parts that touch the product and hand the line over to the next shift with the paperwork signed. Three shifts rotate weekly, 06:00-14:00, 14:00-22:00 and 22:00-06:00, and you report to the line leader.

Finished primary school, no previous trade needed

Operators who hold the weight and the hygiene record for a year are trained as line setters, who change the format and the tooling between runs and are paid a higher rate.

A clean production hall at about eighteen degrees, with washable floors, running lines and constant machine noise. Hearing protection, a hairnet, a work coat and safety shoes are issued and worn at all times.
