You set out the wall from the marked line, lay the first course in a levelling mortar bed and build up in thin bed adhesive, checking every third course with a spirit level and a string line. You cut blocks on the table saw, form lintels and openings to the drawing and build in the anchors the structural design calls for. At the end of each pour you clean the joints and cover the wall against rain. The site works 07:00-15:30 from Monday to Friday, Saturday is voluntary and paid separately.

Trade certificate as a bricklayer, or five years on the trowel

Bricklayers who can set out a whole floor and keep a gang supplied become gang leaders, which carries a fixed supplement. The firm pays for the scaffolding ticket and the site foreman course.

Apartment block sites with system scaffolding, edge protection on every floor and a heated container for breaks, with drying space for clothes. Helmet, gloves and safety boots are mandatory and issued.
