CNC Machine Operator

You load the blank into the fixture, call up the programme, set the zero point and run the first piece under a reduced feed. The first piece is measured to the drawing with a caliper, a micrometer and a bore gauge, and you record the result before the batch is released. During the batch you watch tool wear, change an insert when the surface tells you to and correct the offset at the control. Two shifts run 06:00-14:00 and 14:00-22:00 with a weekly rotation.

Trade certificate as a machinist, toolmaker or fitter

At least two years on a CNC mill, lathe or press brake

Reading a drawing with tolerances and surface finish marks

Caliper, micrometer and bore gauge used correctly

Editing offsets at the control, Heidenhain or Siemens

Willing to rotate the morning and the afternoon shift

Net salary from 1283 up to 1411 EUR per month

Operators who write and prove their own programmes move to the setter grade within about a year, and from there to the programming office. The workshop pays the course at a training centre in Brno.

A clean machining hall with chip conveyors, coolant mist extraction at every machine and a separate measuring room kept at twenty degrees. Goggles, gloves and safety shoes are mandatory and issued by the employer.
