You install cold and hot water, waste and heating pipework in apartment buildings: setting out the runs from the drawing, drilling and fixing brackets, pressing multilayer and stainless pipe with a jaw tool, soldering copper where the detail asks for it, and laying PP waste at the correct fall. You fit radiators, manifolds and water meters, then pressure test each riser and record the reading on the test sheet. Handover to the site manager goes floor by floor. Work is 07:00 to 15:00 Monday to Friday, with one on call weekend a month.

Trade school as a plumber or five years on building services

Reading an installation drawing and a riser schedule

Driving licence B for the service van

Basic English or Slovenian for the site meeting

Fitters who take on a building of their own move to lead fitter with a helper, and the company pays for the gas installation licence that opens up the boiler work.

Work is inside the building, in shafts, plant rooms and flats, with dust extraction on the drilling and a warm site container for the breaks. Helmet, gloves, knee pads and safety boots come from the employer.
