Roofer

You lead a crew of three on pitched roofs: setting battens to the tile gauge, laying the underlay, fixing clay or concrete tiles, and closing ridges, valleys and verges. Sheet metal work covers gutters, flashings and chimney aprons in titanium zinc. You measure the roof before the material is ordered, split the day between the crew, check the fall protection anchors each morning and sign the daily report for the office. When the weather stops the roof, the crew moves into workshop preparation. You answer to the owner and meet the client on site.

A crew leader who brings in and measures his own jobs moves to site manager for the whole company, and the firm pays for the sheet metal master craftsman examination.

Work is on pitched roofs up to twelve metres, with scaffolding, edge protection and anchor points fitted before the crew steps up. Helmet, harness, gloves and non slip boots are mandatory and supplied by the employer.
