On a new flat you set out the runs from the drawing, lay PPR and multilayer pipe, press the fittings, and hang the drainage in PVC with the fall the plan gives. Every riser is pressure tested at ten bar and the result is written on the test sheet before the walls close. On service calls you find the leak, cut out and replace the section, change taps, cartridges and boiler valves, and clear blockages with the drum machine. You order your own material from the depot and keep the van stock in order. Work is 07:30-16:00 with one on call weekend a month, paid separately.

Trade school as a plumber or five years on installations

The firm is taking on heating work as well and will pay the gas boiler course for a plumber who wants it, which moves the pay grade up. The service side needs a lead fitter next spring.

Half the month on a building site with a hoist and a heated container, half in occupied flats where the floor is covered before the tools come in. Knee pads, gloves, goggles and safety shoes are provided.
