You read the bar bending schedule, cut and bend rod from eight to twenty five millimetres on the machine, and tag each bundle with the position number the site will look for. On the assembly bench you tie the cages for columns and beams with wire and a tying tool, set the spacers to the cover the drawing gives, and check the count before the bundle goes on the truck. Offcuts are sorted by diameter for the scrap bin. The shop works 07:00-15:00 with one Saturday a month when a slab is due on Monday.

Trade school in construction or four years of reinforcement work

The yard needs a second person who can price a schedule and plan the cutting list, and it takes that person from the bench. The machine operator grade pays more than the bench grade.

A covered shop open at the sides, so summer is hot and winter is cold, with a crane over the bending line and a heated room for breaks. Gloves, arm guards, helmet and steel soled boots are mandatory.
