Warehouse Operative

You pick to a scanner or a voice headset, take between 120 and 180 lines an hour depending on the aisle, and build the pallet so the heavy cases sit at the bottom. After picking you wrap, weigh and label the pallet, book it into the dispatch area and report a missing item straight away instead of guessing. Cartons run up to 20 kg and a lift assist is there for the heavy ones. Two shifts run 06:00-14:30 and 14:30-23:00 with a weekly change, and the group leader shows every new aisle before you start on it.

No qualification needed, three days of paid training on the scanner

Fit for a full shift on your feet and cartons up to 20 kg

Accurate counting and honesty about a missing item

Forklift licence is a plus and can be paid for later

Reliable attendance, because the wave is planned per person

Operatives who hold the pick rate for a quarter get the forklift and reach truck licence paid, which raises the hourly rate. Two of the four group leaders on this site started as pickers last year.

A modern hall at 16 to 18 degrees with wide aisles, conveyors to the packing benches, rubber mats at every station and a quiet break room. Safety shoes, vest and gloves are provided.
