Construction Laborer

You support the bricklayers and concreters: unloading and distributing materials, mixing mortar, cleaning and oiling formwork, passing up reinforcement, clearing rubble and keeping the site tidy. You also run the plate compactor, the cut off saw and the hammer drill, and you fence and sign the working area before the gang starts. The charge hand gives out the tasks each morning and shows you every tool before you use it. Hours are 07:00-16:00 with a half hour break, and the week ends at 14:00 on Friday.

Helpers who stay a season and pick up the trade are put through the mason or concreter apprenticeship for adults, which the company pays. Two of the current charge hands started as site helpers.

Open sites with a tower crane, a fenced storage area, dust extraction on the saws and a heated cabin with a microwave. Helmet, high visibility jacket, gloves, ear protection and boots are mandatory.
