Eight bricklayers join the shell gangs of a Berlin contractor from August, on apartment blocks of four to six storeys in Marzahn and Hellersdorf, mostly calcium silicate and clay block. The contract is permanent and paid to the construction wage groups.
About role
You lay external and internal walls in calcium silicate and clay block, set lintels, work to line and plumb, and place precast stairs with the crane. The day also covers mixing and hoisting mortar, raising the scaffold to the second lift, stripping small concrete pours and taking the measurements for the site diary at the end. You work in a gang of four and report any deviation from the drawing to the charge hand. Hours are Monday to Thursday 07:00-16:30 and Friday to 14:00, with the winter bad weather rules in January and February.
Who's a fit?
Completed training as a bricklayer or mason, or five years in the trade
Sure with line, level, laser and mortar mixes
Reading a shell drawing and setting out from given axes
Scaffold awareness and a head for heights to the second lift
Physically fit for block work in summer heat and winter cold
Willing to start at 07:00 and travel to sites inside Berlin
Basic German or English for the daily briefing

Promotion terms
A bricklayer who can set out a floor plan alone takes over a gang as charge hand, usually inside two seasons. The company pays the Vorarbeiter course and the Polier school at the Berlin chamber of crafts.
Work environment
Open sites with a tower crane, a mortar silo, scaffold with a proper edge rail and a heated cabin for breaks. Helmet, high visibility jacket, gloves, knee pads and safety boots are provided.
