Metal Machine Operator

You load the sheet onto the table, call up the stored programme, set the tool and the back gauge for the part and run the first piece for measurement. Through the shift you check the angle with a protractor and the length with a tape, change a worn tool and clear the scrap bin. Finished parts are deburred, counted against the job card and stacked on a transport pallet with the job number on top. Two shifts run 06:00-14:30 and 14:30-23:00 with a weekly rotation and a paid handover.

Vocational certificate in engineering or metalwork, or equal practice

At least one year on a press brake, a saw or a machining centre

Reading a part drawing and a job card without help

Correct use of a caliper, a protractor and a depth gauge

Slinging licence an advantage, the course is paid

An operator who learns to edit the programme at the machine and to set the press brake alone moves to the setter grade, which carries a fixed supplement and first choice of shift.

A heated hall with extraction over the cutting table, a separate deburring corner and a crane on every aisle. Goggles, gloves, ear protection and safety shoes are mandatory and issued by the employer.
