Construction Labourer

You will mix and pour concrete, carry and stack bricks, blocks and bags of cement, and keep material moving to the bricklayers and carpenters. A lot of the day is setting up and stripping formwork, digging trenches by hand or with the breaker, and clearing rubble into skips. You will push wheelbarrows up ramps, feed the cement mixer, and help unload trucks when they arrive. Most sites are residential blocks of three to five floors, so there is plenty of work with the hoist and the scaffolding crew. Shifts usually run 7am to 3pm, six days some weeks when a pour is booked. In summer the foreman moves the heavy lifting to early morning before the heat sets in.

Physically fit and able to lift 25 kg loads all day

Start as a general labourer and move up as you learn the trade. Workers who show up and handle the formwork and mixer well are trained toward a skilled spot with the carpenters or concrete crew. Pay rises with skill, from 1440 net at the start to around 1660 net once you take on the harder work.

Open-air sites across Split and the surrounding coast, so you work in sun, wind and the odd rainy stretch. The crew is a mix of locals and workers from abroad, and the foreman speaks enough English to keep things clear. Helmets, boots and gloves are provided and the safety rules on scaffolding are taken seriously.
