Fruit Packing Worker

You tip the crates onto the grading line, pull out fruit that is split, marked or undersized, and let the sizer do the rest. At the packing station you line the box, lay the fruit by count, add the label with the grower code and the date, and stack the boxes on the pallet by size. Full pallets are wrapped and moved to the cold store. The day runs 07:00-15:00, with an extra two hours paid as overtime when a lorry is loading.

No qualification required, the grading standard is taught in two days

Packers who return for a second season are offered the grading desk or the cold store, both of which pay a higher daily rate and run several weeks longer. The packing house rehires the same crew each October.

A covered packing hall, open at the loading end, so it follows the outside temperature in autumn and winter. Gloves, an apron and non slip shoes are supplied, and the wet grading section has drainage mats at every station.
