You set out the wall from the marked line, lay block and brick to the string, check level and plumb every few courses and keep the joints even. Openings are formed to the drawing, lintels bedded and propped, and the wall is tied to the frame with the anchors specified. You mix mortar to the stated ratio, keep the board fed and clean the face as you go so the plasterer finds a straight surface. At the end of the day the scaffold is cleared and the unused mortar is taken off the boards. Work runs 07:00-15:30, Monday to Friday.

Trade school for bricklayers or equal practice on site

At least three years laying block and brick on buildings

Bricklayers who set out their own walls and keep the crew supplied take a gang of three within two years, and the company pays for the site supervisor course after that.
