How to get an Italian work residence permit after arrival
Italy's work residence permit is filed within eight days of entry. Interior Ministry fees, permit durations and the 60 day renewal deadline.
A non EU worker entering Italy on a work visa has eight days to report to the Sportello Unico, sign the residence contract and post the permit application. The permit is issued by the Questura. The Ministry of the Interior lists a 16 euro duty stamp, 30.46 euro for the electronic permit and 30.46 euro for the postal service.
The sequence looks straightforward until you read it from the employer's side. The company already has the nulla osta, has already paid for the flight and has already written the worker into the shift plan, yet the worker does not hold the document that authorises the stay. That window is where most weeks are lost, and almost always for ordinary administrative reasons.
The eight days after entry
The eight day deadline from entry into Italy is set out by the prefectures in their instructions on the first hiring of foreign workers. Four things happen in sequence at that Sportello Unico appointment: worker and employer sign the residence contract, the desk issues the tax code, the worker fills in the permit application, and the application goes into the postal kit.
The kit is handed in at one of the designated post offices. From there the file reaches the competent Questura, which calls the worker in for fingerprinting and later for collection of the card. In the meantime the postal receipt serves as proof that the application was filed and allows the worker to stay in employment while the file is processed.
The most common failure is the address. The worker writes the company accommodation on the form, the employer then moves the worker to another site, and the Questura appointment letter arrives somewhere nobody collects it. The file does not fail by itself, but the worker turns up weeks late and the first renewal starts already under pressure. Any employer running shared accommodation should treat a change of address as a formal step, not an internal note.
Durations, cost and renewal
The permit runs for as long as the employment contract allows, inside the limits set by article 5 of the immigration consolidated act (D.Lgs. 286/1998). Renewal, according to the Ministry of Labour's Integrazione Migranti portal, must be applied for in the sixty days before expiry.
| Item | Reference |
|---|---|
| Seasonal work | up to 9 months, in line with the contract |
| Fixed term contract | up to 1 year |
| Open ended contract | up to 2 years |
| Duty stamp | 16 euro |
| Electronic permit | 30.46 euro |
| Postal service | 30.46 euro |
| Contribution under art. 5, paragraph 2 ter | 40 to 100 euro depending on duration |
| Renewal deadline | 60 days before expiry |
One point on cost matters for finance. The three fixed items add up to just under 77 euro, the contribution takes the total to between 117 and 177 euro, and that is the visible part. The invisible part is time: a Questura appointment during working hours, a paid day off, a trip to the provincial capital. Across twenty hires that line costs more than the duty stamps do.
When the permit ties the hire down
A subordinate work permit is attached to the employment that produced it, but it does not end with it. If the employment stops before the permit expires, the worker keeps the permit until its stated end date and can register with the employment services for the remaining period. An incoming employer does not have to restart from the nulla osta if the existing permit is valid for subordinate work. It is one of the few genuine simplifications in the Italian procedure and it is used less than it could be.
Seasonal permits work differently. That permit is tied to seasonal work and to the season it was issued for, and converting it into ordinary subordinate work requires a separate application inside the decreto flussi quotas, as set out in the guide to the 2026 to 2028 quotas. An employer who promises a fruit picker a permanent warehouse job from October is promising a conversion that depends on a quota, not on a signature.
Before the permit comes the residence contract, and with it the duty to name accommodation that meets regional standards. That step is covered in the guide to the residence contract and the housing suitability certificate.
Werklist works through this document chain with European employers on the Nepal, India and Philippines corridors, and the employers page sets out which obligations stay with the company. The residence permit is the document that closes the procedure, not the one that opens it, and planning the start date backwards from the day the card is collected is the fastest way to align the production floor with the Questura's calendar.
